Cam Shaft Inspection (Commercial Vehicles)

The fully automated system for eddy current crack detection of cam shafts was designed for a wide spectrum of combustion engines, i.e. for varying cam shaft geometry and weight. The highly flexible inspection system is capable of inspecting all cam shaft designs without any conversions (chaotic mix). It was installed into an existing production line, containing an industrial robot and specific transport units for supplying of cam shafts. The system allows an automated calibration by use of an integrated reference cam shaft.

  • 35 cam shaft designs (number of cams: 4 … 18; length: ~ 600 … 1200 mm / 24″ … 47″)
  • 3 different types of cams (varying width and shape)
  • 2 test stations parallel running: loading/unloading (cam shaft 1) simultaneous with the inspection (cam shaft 2) in order to mininize the cycle time
  • 6 dual-probes, each operated with fast internal multiplexing (quasi-simultaneously)
  • tangential absolute probes for constant sensitivity independent of the actual work angle
  • eddy current probe with wear protection (carbid metal)
  • high sensitivity (dimensions of reference notch: length < 3 mm / 0.12″, width ~ 0,1 mm / 0.004″, depth < 0,5 mm / 0.02″)
  • on-line data evaluation by the PL500 eddy current instrument
  • documentation for “bad” parts (eddy curent data)
  • connected with the customers network (complete integration into the existing system for materials supply and quality control)
  • optional remote maintenance
