Inspection of Cylinder Blocks Using Image Based Techniques
Bore holes of cylinder blocks have to be manufactured not alone with high dimensional accuracy, but also free from any surface defects. So appropriate NDT methods have to be applied, capable of detecting tiny cracks, pores etc. Additionally - in order to ensure a long operating life - the quality of the wear protection layer (with embedded Si-particles) has to be examined. The test system is fully integrated into the production line. Due to an automized inspection and by using imaging eddy current technique the system provides a high throughput (cycle time ~25 s / cylinder block) and a complete process visualization and quality documentation.

- used sensors: 2-channel-rotors
- wear protection for increased probe’s operating life
- rotational speed 1000 rpm
- reliable detection of tiny surface cracks and pores (< 1 mm)
- fully automated calibration by means of an integrated reference block (located in park position)
- qualified for series production due to the excellent sensitivity, reproducibility and high test speeds

- in order to minimize the wear of the inner cylinder surface a minimum content of Si-particles within the structure is needed (homogeneously distributed)
- eddy current testing completely replaces the previous test methods (visual inspections and spot-check microscopy)

- ScanAlyzer software package: covering data acquisition, data evaluation and documentation (Windows-PC)
- defect characterization: maximum defect size, defect geometry and defect position
- calculation of quality classification numbers
- on-line evaluation for each test channel
- sophisticated process visualization (e.g. test results, inspection statistics, system status)
